Blogging About the Belgic

Filed under: Introduction — dannyhyde @ 11:07 pm

As a way of promoting the theology and history of the Belgic Confession (Confessio Belgica), I have begun this little blog. To do so I plan to use my book, With Heart and Mouth: An Exposition of the Belgic Confession, provide resources on the Belgic, and provide a forum to discuss its teaching.

  1. This is great! Thanks for doing this. Hopefully it will result in more exposure for our beloved Confession.

  12. Dear Rev. Hyde,

I just discovered your new blog and I am happy to see your desire to promote the Belgic Confession. I have in my possession your articles that have been published in Outlook. I suppose your book has about the same content as your articles. I will be teaching on the BC in my congregation in 2009, so this is a joy to find more resources about these glorious doctrines. Since we are a French speaking congregation in Quebec, we will have to use a French version of the confession. Of course, the original was first written in French, but this is old French that is very difficult to understand today. There is a more recent French version dated 1850 (in Schaff’s book), but it is still somewhat old French for us. So I have started the personal project to prepare a modern French version of this beautiful confession that will be easier to read but will stay faithful to the original.

I have not looked at all the content of your blog, but there are a few titles and resources about the BC that I have not seen. May be you are aware of their existence. If not, here are the titles:
    - C.G. Bos, Believe and Confess, Volume One, Inter-League Publication Board, London, Ontario, Canada, 2002, 145 pages (translated from the Dutch).
    - C.G. Bos, Believe and Confess, Volume Two, Inter-League Publication Board, London, Ontario, Canada, 2004, 160 pages (translated from the Dutch).
    - Clarence Stam, Everything in Christ. The Christian Faith Outlined According to the Belgic Confession, Premier Printing, Winnipeg, Canada, 1979, 152 pages.
    - J.A. Vink, We Believe, Outlines on the Belgic Confession, Part One (articles 1 to 17), Inter-League Publication Board, London, Ontario, Canada, 1967, 31 pages (translated from the Dutch).
    - J.A. Vink, We Believe, Outlines on the Belgic Confession, Part Two (articles 18 to 37), Inter-League Publication Board, London, Ontario, Canada, 1967, 57 pages (translated from the Dutch).
    - Al Bezuyen, Faith of Our Fathers. Studies in the Belgic Confession, 186 pages (no publishing house, large pages).
    - G. Van Rongen, The Church. Its unity in confession and history. Inheritance Publications, Neerlandia, Alberta, Canada, 1998, 240 pages (commentary on articles 27, 28 and 29).
    - Chuck Baynard, Commentary on the Belgic Confession of Faith. Full Bible Pub., 2008, 136 pages (see review: http://www.cof-fbp.org/Files/BelgicReview.pdf).
    - Clarence Bouwman, The Overflowing Riches of God’s Mercy. Revisiting the Belgic Confession. Proecclesia. 424 pages. (www.proecclesia.com.au). See also his “Notes on the Belgic Confession (http://members.iinet.net.au/~jvd/notes2.htm).
    - C. Pronk, Knowing God. 22 lessons based on the Belgic Confession of faith (www.pronklink.net/catechism.php).

So may the Lord bless your project and may He bless the spreading of the Good News in Jesus Christ!
